SFCM Tells the Story Behind "Dear Camilla

June 26, 2026

The San Francisco Conservatory of Music has published a feature on the making of Dear Camilla, the new album and touring program Patrick created with pianist Jennifer Hou in tribute to his late teacher, violinist Camilla Wicks.

The piece traces the project back to Patrick's master's recital at SFCM, where he first set out to build a concert that wove personal letters to Wicks between the pieces of music rather than performing a standard, silent recital. SFCM's Professional Development and Engagement Center helped fund the original sessions, including travel to record with the project's mixing engineer, and those early grants eventually led to the Navona Records release and the duo's growing international tour, including stops in Australia, England, and Ireland.

The article also includes reflections from Jennifer Hou on what drew her to the collaboration, and from Patrick on what he learned from Wicks as a student — including the experience of playing her own violin, a 1959 Arthur Edward Smith instrument, throughout the recording.
